About the Company

Our client is an innovative clean energy technology company developing next-generation solutions at the intersection of nuclear energy, medicine, and waste recycling. Leveraging accelerator-driven systems (ADS) and advanced fuels, they are working to deliver intrinsically safe energy while addressing one of the most pressing challenges in nuclear science: long-lived radioactive waste. With international recognition and support from major U.S. research programs, they are now building a specialist team at Los Alamos National Laboratory to implement this ground-breaking project.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Accelerator Physicist to drive the development of a highly reliable ion source and particle accelerator beamline. This role will be central to advancing system reliability and performance for one of the most innovative nuclear and accelerator initiatives globally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and optimisation of beam dynamics models for the ion source and low-energy beamline.
  • Contribute to test bench design and ion source testing to achieve stable, high-intensity proton beams with minimal beam trips.
  • Collaborate with internal and external experts to design and implement fault-tolerant, redundant ion source systems.
  • Develop and execute experiments to validate ion source and beamline performance against operational requirements.
  • Analyse beam diagnostics data to identify and mitigate failure modes, improving long-term reliability.
  • Participate in Design-for-Reliability reviews and failure mechanism analyses, proposing enhancements to system design.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Accelerator Physics, Particle Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Extensive experience with beam dynamics and particle accelerator systems.
  • Proficiency with modelling and simulation tools (e.g., IBSIMU, TRACEWIN, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of accelerator reliability, failure mechanisms, and design optimisation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in ion source design and operation.
  • Expertise in fault-tolerant system designs for accelerator environments.
  • Familiarity with Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion sources.
  • Experience applying advanced diagnostic tools and AI-based data analysis to beam performance.

Why Join?

  • Contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of nuclear science and clean energy.
  • Collaborate with world-class scientists and engineers on a pioneering U.S.-based project.
  • Play a key role in shaping the future of intrinsically safe, sustainable nuclear technologies.
