Electronics & Instrumentation Engineer

Los Alamos Competitive Permanent

Nuclear

Our client is an innovative clean energy technology organisation developing next-generation solutions at the crossroads of nuclear science, accelerator physics, and advanced energy systems. Their mission is to create intrinsically safe, sustainable power technologies while addressing long-term challenges in waste recycling and reliability.

The Role
As an Electronics & Instrumentation Engineer, you will play a key role in the development, testing, and reliable operation of ion source systems within a particle accelerator environment. You will design and implement precision instrumentation and control solutions while working alongside a multidisciplinary team of engineers and physicists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement instrumentation systems for the ion source and its associated test bench, ensuring precise monitoring and control of operational parameters.

  • Integrate and calibrate sensors for diagnostics, including temperature, pressure, beam current, and other critical performance metrics.

  • Develop and optimise control systems for the ion source, including signal processing and real-time data acquisition.

  • Design and implement the data acquisition interface to the test bench software.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design fault-tolerant and redundant systems, as well as monitoring systems for the ion source.

  • Conduct testing, validation, and troubleshooting of instrumentation and control systems during ion source commissioning and operation.

  • Document system designs, test results, and operational guidelines to support long-term maintenance and scalability.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.

  • 7+ years of experience in instrumentation, control systems, sensor integration, or in designing and maintaining electronic systems for high-reliability/industrial applications.

  • Hands-on experience with data acquisition systems, sensor calibration, and signal processing.

  • Proficiency in programming and scripting for automation and control (e.g., Ladder Logic, LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ion source development, electrical systems (high-voltage, RF, or power electronics) in particle accelerators or similar high-power environments.

  • Familiarity with automation and control systems (control theory, feedback systems) used in accelerator facilities.

  • Knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards such as IEC 61000 and electromagnetic interference mitigation.

  • Knowledge of advanced diagnostic tools and AI-based data analysis for system monitoring.

  • Understanding of reliability engineering principles and predictive maintenance techniques.

Why Join?

  • Contribute to one of the most innovative projects in clean energy and advanced nuclear systems.

  • Collaborate with world-class scientists and engineers at a globally recognised research hub.

  • Be part of a growing international team shaping the future of safe, sustainable energy.
