Job Purpose

  • This role, reporting to the Head of Programme for the Generic Power Station Design, will lead on a range of engineering aspects of programme and project management with specific responsibility for all Safety and Regulatory Affairs aspects including the Generic Design Assessment.  This role will lead a team of Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers to ensure successful delivery of project milestones to time, cost and quality.

Key Results 

  • Providing project management oversight and support to the execution of their programme of work and tracking progress compared with the performance measurement baseline.
  • Developing and controlling the budget for their programme of work and managing expenditure within agreed spending plans.
  • Leading the creation and maintenance of the required project documentation for their programme of work.
  • Leading the development and production of reporting for their programme of work against agreed KPIs, including earned value and variance analysis.
  • Interpreting performance data to lead the development and implementation of measures to improve delivery performance in their programme of work.
  • Liaising with the Supply Chain and Safety and Engineering functions to co-ordinate dependencies with their programme of work and resolving conflicts.
  • Leading on the appropriate management of risk within their programme of work.
  • Leading on the implementation of change management within their programme of work.
  • Ensuring compliance with project management processes and procedures as described by the Business Management System.
  • Line management of a team of Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers, including but not limited to recruitment, budget and headcount management, performance management, development, and resource allocation.
  • Delivery of GDA Step 3 to the plan agreed with the regulators.
  • Management of a budget approximately £50m £100m per annum
  • Management of approximately up to 5 project or assistant project managers.
  • The Programme Manager will be responsible for helping to achieve successful delivery of the project to time, cost and quality through the application of project management experience.

Key Selection Criteria 


Project Management 

  • Knowledge: The Engineering project managers need to be familiar with project management
  • methodologies and tools. They should also have a good understanding of risk management, budget
  • management, and change management.
  • Experience: Should also have experience managing projects. This should be demonstrated by previous
  • on-the-job experience. There should be previous experience of setting up and delivering complex
  • engineering projects (multiyear, multi £M projects).
  • Technical skills: Knowledge of specific software and tools (training can be provided where gaps exist), including Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, ARM, SAP, excel, Power BI and Power Apps.


Technical Experience

  • Experience in planning, controlling budgets, risk & opportunities, managing dependencies and driving to schedules, within an engineering, regulatory and / or technical environment. Well organised, systematic, and rigorous approach to planning work and priorities.
  • Skills: A variety of project management skills, such as planning, scheduling, budgeting, risk
  • management, and change management.


Interpersonal & Communication Skills

  • Experience Influencing and using inter-personal skills to communicate effectively across all levels of the organisation and to simplify complex topics and communicate to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Communication skills: Have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Able to
  • communicate clearly and effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving skills: Have strong problem-solving skills. Should be able to identify and solve problems effectively.


Management & Budget Responsibility

  • Experience of working in teams developing schedules and budgets to achieve outcomes including monitoring the performance of a complex project or programme.

Training & Qualification requirements

  • Degree equivalent, preferably in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics subject
  • Extensive Project Management experience in planning, controlling budgets and driving to schedules, within a technical environment
  • Engineering and technical competence, sufficient to enable decision making
  • Understanding of non-core project management roles such as purchasing, commercial, engineering management etc.
  • Well organised, systematic and rigorous approach to planning work and priorities
  • Excellent influencing and inter-personal skills
  • Ability to simplify and communicate complex topics to stakeholders at all levels
  • Member of a professional body and working towards RPP (Recognised Project Professional) qualification or equivalent
  • Familiarity with UK nuclear regulation would be beneficial but not essential


Pay and Benefits

  • We anticipate paying a salary of between 65,000 - £90,000, plus:-
  • Bonus - Performance related bonus of up to 17%
  • Benefits Allowance – £5000, enabling you to create a bespoke package
  • Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
  • Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days
  • Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover health care
  • Life Assurance - 6x pensionable pay
  • £250 - One-off payment for new starters for home office purchases
