We are now recruiting for the exciting role of HSE Design & Construction Senior Safety Adviser, to be involved in the safety and regulatory compliance for game-changing technology within the nuclear industry.

Role Purpose

A key objective of this role is to integrate robust health and safety policies, standards, processes, and best practices into engineering activities and product design definitions.

The HSE Design & Construction Senior Safety Adviser will support the development and implementation of the organisation’s strategic approach to health and safety in the design and construction phases. They will ensure that relevant programmes are implemented effectively to deliver a safe design solution, reducing conventional safety risks to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).

This role requires an individual with strong interpersonal skills, capable of understanding, prioritising, and delivering complex requirements. The successful candidate will apply strategic thinking to the organisation’s integrated health and safety approach, ensuring compliance with UK legislation and industry best practices to deliver a repeatable and safe plant design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the organisation’s strategic approach to health and safety during the design and construction phases.
  • Manage and coordinate the health and safety framework, defining requirements to be applied across all design and construction projects.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on health and safety legislation to engineering and design teams (e.g., CDM, LOLER, COMAH, Working at Height Regulations).
  • Support engineering and design teams in fulfilling their health and safety obligations, ensuring best practices and industry expectations are met.
  • Participate in specialist safety assessments such as HAZOPs and HAZIDs.
  • Assist in the creation of technical documents related to design and construction safety.
  • Identify and collect relevant safety data, validating findings and recommending improvement actions.
  • Investigate incidents, track trends, and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Support regulatory interventions and liaise with external stakeholders regarding health and safety compliance.
  • Promote a strong health and safety culture within the organisation.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Experience providing Subject Matter Expert (SME) advice on health and safety (e.g., CDM) across large infrastructure projects.
  • Strong background in design risk management and supporting operational and design teams across multiple locations.
  • Experience in developing and implementing health and safety policies aligned to ISO 45001/45003 frameworks.
  • Proven ability to engage with regulators, senior leaders, and auditors.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment techniques, including designer risk assessments, HAZOPs, and HAZIDs.
  • Experience conducting risk-based assurance activities to maintain a safe and compliant safety/environmental management system.

Training & Qualification Requirements

  • Chartered membership of IOSH or actively working towards full chartership.
  • Auditor qualification.
  • Incident investigation experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ practical experience in health and safety within design and construction.
