Every year, World Overshoot Day marks when humanity's demand for ecological resources exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that year. The ecological footprint measures how much we consume compared to what the Earth can replenish, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable practices and policy changes.
At PACE People Ltd, we are committed to mitigating the effects of this ecological overshoot. By partnering with Ecologi, we have funded planting over 3,487 trees, which help absorb CO2 and restore ecosystems. Additionally, we have supported projects that have avoided the emissions of 241.4 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), contributing to the fight against climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.
How PACE Helps Prevent World Overshoot Day
PACE solely collaborates with sectors and companies dedicated to accelerating the transition to Clean Energy. We help these organizations find skilled individuals to achieve this crucial mission. Our belief in the power of collective action drives us to make a meaningful impact by supporting renewable initiatives and striving for more environmentally conscious choices.
To date, we have placed over 230 contractors on Clean Energy projects, working approximately 220,425 contract hours. In 2024, we have completed a total of 771.6 MW of Clean Energy projects. Our new office, powered 100% by renewable sources, has retained its existing building structure, saving 5,000 tons of carbon. We also feature a rooftop farm developed to the highest standards of sustainability and ESG credentials, including a mushroom farm that recycles used coffee grounds.
Understanding World Overshoot Day
World Overshoot Day is determined by the Global Footprint Network, which measures the world's ecological footprint against the Earth's capacity to regenerate resources. Factors such as population growth, consumption habits, technology, and conservation efforts are assessed to set the date. Unfortunately, the trend shows World Overshoot Day arriving sooner each year due to increasing human activities.
Overusing resources harms ecosystems, leading to habitat loss, species extinction, and pollution. Climate change impacts both nature and human societies, threatening resource security and economic stability. This underscores the necessity for sustainable practices in governance and community planning.
Sustainable Solutions and Governance
Sustainable technologies, such as clean energy and efficient agriculture, offer hope. Circular economic models that emphasize reuse and recycling can replace the wasteful 'take-make-dispose' approach. Implementing these models requires significant changes but can greatly benefit long-term sustainability.
International agreements like the Paris Climate Accord and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals provide a roadmap for balancing human needs with the Earth's capacity. Effective governance involves clear enforcement, transparency, and public involvement, inspiring widespread adoption of sustainable practices.
